Here’s our picks for the best bets on Netflix this week, streaming directly to your Tivo:
- Movie: Letters from Iwo Jima – This Clint Eastwood directed drama tells the story of Japanese soldiers during the Allied advance on Iwo Jima in World War II. What makes it fascinating is that Eastwood also made Flags of our Fathers, a film told from the American point of view during the same battle. Very moving, and worth watching. Eastwood knows how to tell stories.
- Movie: Rapa-Nui – This movie tells a tale of opposing tribes trying to survive on Easter Island, as resources dwindle and inhabitants turn to fighting each other and even cannibalism. I was on the fence about this one, if only because it slows about mid-way through, but it’s still worth a watch due to the overall good acting.
- Movie: Witch Hunt – I’m going to include a full review of this one, but I wanted to make sure it was on the Top 5 this week. Narrated by Sean Penn, this documentary tells the true story of 34 people who were wrongly accused of child abuse in the 1980’s. Some stayed in prison for 20 years. A harrowing tale of what can go very wrong with our justice system and a must watch.
- Movie: Another 48 Hrs. – This 1990 sequel again stars Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte, as cop and con who must team up to catch a criminal. Yes, it’s more like the second and third hour of the original, but still funny and with out a doubt worth watching. (Only available till Nov. 1, so catch it now!)
- TV: Jim Henson’s the Storyteller: Greek Myths - There are four episodes of these shows, which feature the amazing puppetry of the late Jim Henson. They tell the tales of classic Greek myths we’ve all heard or read before, but there far more enjoyable with real “live” puppets instead of animation. All episodes are worth catching on Netflix this week.
